Handwork

One of my goals for 2016 is to
make some of the Bucilla kits
I have collected over the past couple of years.
If I can make one a month, I'll go through what I have....
I think!

The first one I chose is the
Nordic Christmas Tree Advent Calendar.

The ornaments stitch up pretty quickly and are so cute!
Instead of using polyfil to stuff each ornament as the directions suggest,
I use batting. I have a lot of batting scraps and I like the look of the
batting padding better. If the piece needs more padding,
I use two pieces of batting.
This makes the project a little more portable, too.
It's easier to take a piece of batting along then a bag of polyfil.

It took me several evenings to stitch all of the sequins around the tree.
They sure sparkle!

The pattern suggests sewing sequins on the tree to hold
the ornaments, but I'm going to find little buttons to use instead.
I think they will be sturdier.
The buttons will be stitched on the white dots on the tree.

The star hasn't been sewn to the tree yet,
and the hangers for the ornaments will be added
once they are all finished.

The tree is has not had the backing or padding added yet,
but will soon.
Six ornaments done... only 18 more to go!

The only bad thing about stitching these kits is it
takes away from my knitting.
I do still knit in the car or while waiting at appointments, etc,.
so I have a little progress to show on my next pair of socks.

This yarn is so reasonably priced and knits up nicely.

Happy Friday!
Happy Creating!

You're ALMOST making me want to get some kits. But I suppose I should finish the tree skirt I started for Son-1 almost 20 years ago when I gave the one my mother had made to Son-2 because it was dated the year he was born.
Pretty yarn, BTW.

I love the Bucilla kits and the tree is wonderful. That is going to be beautiful.

There just isn't enough time in the day to do everything we want to do. Those socks would quickly become my favorite in that yarn.

Love that yarn I need to look for that brand. Bless your heart for getting at the kits ! I'm not one for sequences or beads

That's really nice yarn! I just finished a Christmas Stocking with tons of beads and sequins so I can totally relate to how long it took to apply them.

What a pretty and fun project! Love it! Nice socks, too. Don't you wish you could do sewing with one hand and knitting with the other?!

Your tree reminds me so much of the fancy sequin/bead felt stockings I stitched for my 2 kids when they were little. It was a lot of work but fun and they loved them. Your calendar will be super special! And those socks well you know I think they are yummy-you sure do knit a lot-love it. So do you have a special place you get that yarn as you say it is reasonable? And does one skein make a pair?

I love the title of your blog. I am all about doodlebugs and rosebuds. I am married, with two girls and live out in the country in Texas. Thank you for sharing your posts with all of us.
I am looking at doing felt stockings for my family. Thought I would start with the Advent Tree to see how it goes before I jump into trying to finish several stockings. I have always wanted an advent tree, but never found the right one. I have been eyeing the bucilla kit and also thought that buttons would be a nice alternative for hanging the ornaments.
Also want to learn to knit.
