First of all,
I have been away...
on a mini quilt retreat!
My SIL in upstate NY invited me to join her and three others
at a little quilt cottage in upstate NY
to sew.
I hopped in the car with all of my stuff and headed north.
It was so much fun,
but I don't have any photos to share!
It was 2 1/2 days of sewing to our hearts content and I did.
I'll show what I worked on soon,
but the best thing is,
they invited me back next year!
Now, onto my dilema....
I have been working on these applique blocks for far too long.
They are finished (Woohoo!),
but not trimmed.
Where I am struggling is what to use for sashing.
Normally I know exactly what I want to use,
but this time I can't see what the blocks need.
Option #1:
Red plaid..
I'd use either blue or polka dot for the corner stones.
(I don't have any more of the background fabric.)
Option #2:
Blue Polka Dots...
(the blocks REALLY need to be trimmed!)
I would use either the red plaid or another polka dot for the sashing.
Option #3:
It's a bit hard to imagine,
but I thought of using this blue and red polka dot along with two strips
of the blue for the sashing.
These are the fabrics I found that work well with the blocks.
Option #4:
Keep looking!
What do you think?
I don't know why this is difficult for me,
but nothing is jumping out and saying
"Pick me! Pick me!"
I don't want to put these blocks away...Again!
Any comments would be greatly appreciated!
Happy Quilting!

Sometimes a gal just needs time away with the girls. Sounds like you'll be taking them up on their invitation for next year! As for your sashing options, I choose blue sashing with red plaid cornerstones. Would it be possible to put the plaid on point?
Before I looked at your words I immediately thought "red plaid!" But I think yours is too small a scale and ends up looking pink, at least in the photo. I like the blue and red dots, but it would bother me that the background appears to be whiter than the block background (just a personal flaw, I admit). The blue really brings out the blue in the blocks and I think trying out some cornerstone options will make you fall in love with the blue.
I like #2 - the blue really seems to make the other colors stand out
I definitely like the blue the best, but you'll find what works for you, I'm sure. Cute blocks!
When I read the post the red was nice.......until I saw the blue!!!! I think the blue really makes it sparkle.
Where in NY?
The red check read pink to me. I like the blue better. I think a stronger red or green would make it read Christmas. What's your goal with this?
I love the blue because it makes the blocks just pop. The red looked a bit pink to me too. I have to agree with Swooze - do you want it to look Christmas-y? Then a stronger red would be great, but if the goal isn't a Christmas look then the blue may be a better choice. You'll find just the right option I'm sure.
As i was reading and looking at the red i was thinking try blue and you did! Love your blocks they are so cheerful cant wait to see all that you did while you were away.

I agree with the others. The blue sashing just really makes the blocks pop.
I would use the blue, it would bother me if the plaid wasn't straight! I would only use the single blue sashing, not the double--unless you need the quilt to be bigger. Choices-I hate deciding, I'm always second guessing. Whatever you decide it will be a beautiful quilt.
I'm normally a red person, but I do think the blue is better with those gorgeous blocks.
I like the blue OH so much better. And I would NOT put cornerstones. It's a nice, clean look as it is and you don't want to detract from those gorgeous appliqué blocks.
I love this quilt and I am always drawn to red first but when I saw the blue that's the one that makes my heart sing. To me it makes the blocks the center of attraction. Use what makes your heart happy and you won't be wrong.
I love the blue. I don't think I would add the other polka dot. The blue just jumped at me and said YES! Beautiful blocks.
The blue is nice and bright and complements the blocks beautifully. I'm not a big fan of cornerstones as I think they might steal some thunder from your lovely applique.
Option three grabs my attention. The addition of a different but yet somewhat similar light fabric gives the quilt some added zing.
I really like option number 3.
First off, your blocks are GORGEOUS!! Now, since you asked our opinions...
I think the red plaid/gingham and the blue dots are both too busy, too similar to the other fabrics in your blocks, and that's why you're not feeling that "wow" factor that you're looking for. My first thought was solid red or blue for the sashing. But then I thought that a stripe might be a nice complement to your dots and florals.
I found three possible sashing fabrics for you at Fat Quarter Shop here: https://www.fatquartershop.com/catalogsearch/result/?q=red+blue+stripe. There's Collector's Gallery Wavy Stripe in either the Red or the Blue. Or there's a Stonehenge Red White and Blue Starred Stripes fabric that might be really cute.
In the end, it's always personal -- you have a good eye for color and fabrics. I'm sure whatever you choose will be beautiful!
I loved the red the minute I saw it, but then the blue also grabbed by attention. Option 3 is my least favorite. Big help I was!!
