Design Wall Monday

I decided to switch things up a bit
and play with some
reproduction type fabrics this week.

These blocks are made from fabric
in the
Grace by Three Sisters line.

It is a Christmas line,
but
except for the pink, red and green colors...
I am not really seeing Christmas.

These blocks take a little time, but I am enjoying the process.

The block is called
"Blind Man's Fancy"

Okay... in these pictures I see Christmas.
Maybe it's the brown fabric that doesn't look
like Christmas??

I am not wild about the center of this block.
... or the brown, really...
I could replace the center...
I might like it better then...
Or maybe the whole block will go in the
orphan block box....

Time will tell.

Visit Patchwork Times to see
what others are working on this week.

Love the sawtooth border - I think the Christmas colours look great too!

These are great blocks. I just don't see them as Christmasy per se. I think you could use a quilt with these blocks all year round. And, at Christmas they would definitely echo the season but not scream out CHRISTMAS quilt. Nice job.

Now, I clicked through to your blog from the linky specifically because I DID see Christmas in your picture! The funny thing is that my own design wall is covered with pieced and appliqued blocks that are deliberately supposed to look like Christmas, with reds and greens and poinsettias and holly, but when I step back and look a the whole thing I feel like the yellow/gold fabrics are spoiling everything. I don't see Christmas; I see ketchup and mustard!!

You mentioned that you might replace that one center patch where you centered the red stripe -- can you do that without taking the whole block apart? I have a couple of blocks on my own wall where I regret just one fabric choice, but I worked so hard to get the seam intersections perfect and to have the units all measure up exactly. I can't bear the thought of ripping out all of that work!

I have replaced a piece of a block before. It isn't easy, but I have done it. I rip out the "piece" seams and then rip back in the seams that come into that piece between a 1/2-1". Not something I enjoy doing!

Thank you. I like the colors, but might need to stay away from the brown. Although, maybe by adding more brown to the quilt, the color will blend more.

Thank you! They are fun blocks to make.

Very true, Bonnie. I hadn't thought about that! Thank you!

I think the brown is dominant in the one block because it is the darkest, and there is hardly any of it in the other blocks. I don't know how many blocks you intend to make, but adding a little bit of brown in them will help it blend.

Hi Ramona...First let me say how pretty the fabrics are and what a great job you are doing on a pretty intense to piece block. I imagine when a bit more of the brown is scattered throughout a few more blocks, it won't seem quite so important. You may end up with a quilt that is good for all seasons and especially appropriate for Christmas.

Love the blocks, but I agree some of them don't look like Christmas. Still it's going to be a gorgeous project.
