Placemats and Napkins

Last year a friend of mine gave me a package of fusible
placemat forms and some cork fabric.
I thought and thought about what I was going to do with
both of these and then it came to me this week.
A couple of years ago I bought a 144" long tablecloth at
Crate and Barrel for $15!  I loved the fabric and wanted to make napkins with it.

I'm finding that I need to have small projects to do in between
the big quilts.  Some days I can focus on the quilts,
but other days I need mindless things to do.
Mindless was what happened starting on Monday.
Out came the tablecloth and cutting began.

I cut a bunch of napkins and had some pieces leftover that were
too small for napkins.
Then I remembered the placemat forms.

Out they came, along with the cork and the fun began.

The placemats went together so quickly.
I traced the shape of the form onto the cork and cut it out.
Then ironed the fabric to the top and the cork to the bottom.
Once that was done, I trimmed the fabric to the shape of the form.

I had the navy blue batik in my stash and cut bias binding from that.

There were six forms in the package and I had just enough
left over pieces of fabric to make the placemats.

The cork worked well on the back and makes them reversible.
The only problem I had was joining the binding.
The placemats are too stiff to use my usual method of
connecting binding and I'm not totally happy with
what I did, but they are finished.

We have some nice new napkins and placemats for our kitchen table.
And another thing is checked off of my list!

Happy Quilting!
Be well and be safe!

Looks like you were able to stitch right through the cork. They are lovely!

The fabric is absolutely gorgeous and made lovely napkins and placemats. I've not been brave enough to use cork fabric. I haven't seen it in any local shops either but have read where other quilters have used it. Well done, Ramona. Keep that inspiration coming---thanks so much.

OMG! I get distracted from blog reading and you go to town. I love the placemats!!! Awesome job. And that squares quilt top! I must make it!!! But I only have 2" squares cut in any quantity, so mine will be smaller or take more effort. Now to find a background to use. Hmmm, do I need another project? Nope, but that's never stopped me before! LOL

OMG look at those aqua candles!! Oh sorry I got off track, I was supposed to look at the placemats, LOL. Seriously that makes for some really great placemats with the pretties on top and the cork on the bottom.
