2 1/2" Scrappy Squares

My self-imposed ban on blog reading and posting
is over as Lent ends tonight.
I was only posting finishes on my blog,
since this is my way of keeping track of what I've done
and, more importantly, when.
I missed reading about everyone's quilting adventures,
but it was good for me to stop for a bit.

As with most of us, the mask making continues.
In between making masks,
I worked on this scrappy quilt using 2 1/2" squares.
As those who follow me know,
I do not enjoy making scrappy quilts
and am not a huge fan of how they look, either.

This quilt has been fun to make, though.
I kind of used it as a leader/ender with the masks,
but then just began sewing the blocks so it could move along.

When cleaning my Hidey Hole,
I found a bag of 2 1/2" squares I had cut several years ago.
I dug into my hug bags of scraps and cut more,
adding to the mix.
Then the 16 patches were made.

There are all kinds of fun things to find in this quilt...
butterflies, crabs, fish, whales, flowers, basketballs,
golf clubs and bags, snowmen, shells, the sun, etc.

My favorite though is the fussy cut Snoopy in the photo above.  :)

At least two borders will be added;
one of the cream and then another round of squares.
I may add another round of cream after that, but we shall see.
If I add another round of cream,
I may use a scrappy binding.

Needless to say,
there are A LOT of 2 1/2" squares left.
Maybe another scrappy quilt is in my future.

***Edit***
I have had several questions about the pattern for this quilt from
No Reply Bloggers.
I did not have a pattern for this quilt.
The design just came to me as I went along making it.

Now back to making masks!

Happy Quilting!
Be safe and be well.

I love it! I'm a lot like you; my scraps have to be orderly. The white really helps your scraps shine.

Scrappy quilts are wonderful, so kudos to you for making something up you are not fond of doing. Just think of it as a free quilt;) I have been cutting 2.5" sqs here and there, some have found their way into other projects instead of the quilt I want to do with them. But hey there are always more scraps to be cut! Happy Easter.

Your scrappy quilts are so pretty, even though I am not a scrappy quilt person either. They are so cheery. I have a large drawer of 2.5" squares but I am dropping them off at a friend's house if I ever get to town again. Normally she grows through them at our April retreat and thins them out for her own projects, but that is not happening this year. I am anxious to get to some of my own projects. I love my friend and wanted to help her out, but I am tired of shop samples!

Would you be upset if I created something similar?

I love scrap quilts, especially if they are made with 2.5 inch squares. This is a wonderful scrap quilt. I really like the contrast between the 16 patch blocks and the sashing with 9 patch blocks.

Is there a pattern for this?

I hope to try to make this out of all the leftovers from making masks. I have made over 400 masks. Lots of scraps left over. A pandemic reminder. Not that we will ever forget.

The squares are 2.5".
The 16-patch blocks are 8" finished, so the white strips are 2.5"×8.5". Just follow the picture until your quilt is as big as you want or you run out of scraps/strips.

I love making scrappy quilts and I'm going to make one copied from your pattern with 16 patches with some mulling that just waiting for me in my sewing room. Thank you for sharing! Kasey from Minnesota.

Thanks so much for sharing your quilt! I had a jellyroll race style quilt top(random fabrics from my stash) that I hated. When I saw your qut on Pinterest I unstiched mine down to 4 strip widths, chopped those up to make the 16-patches & now have a really fun, happy quilt.

I have a box full of 2.5" squares. I love your quilt. I guess it will join my book of ideas. Now I just have to decide which one to make. I was going to alternate 9 patch blocks with white snowballs to give a criss cross effect.

May I copy your idea to make quilt tops to sell?

Just what I am looking for to end my quilting. Too many hand pains now but I have quilted since 1983. I guess it is time. Thankyou Pam Avara

I just love this quilt! I have neighbors that are homesteaders and just rebuilt their house. I want to make them a quilt and this is the one! I appreciate the time you took to post pictures and I will be grateful as I am making one similar. I have been using 2 1/2 inch squares as leaders and enders and have a stack of 16x16 squares. This is just the perfect quilt for them!

I am currently making your quilt -- just need to add the white border and make a ton more 9-patches for the second border. I hope you see this post because your quilt has been a great inspiration.
